Chairman’s Message

As the new Chairman of the Middlesbrough Scouts Gang Show may I welcome you to the Little Theatre.

Having been Producer, Adviser, and now Chairman, my experience tells me that this years Gang Show has more potential than it ever had. The Production team has a wealth of experience and the Executive Committee has a wonderful set of personnel.

This augurs well, and I feel that the audience will be amazed at the talent displayed by the cast.

All that I now can say is ‘Good Luck’ and may all who see the show leave the theatre whistling the tunes having absorbed the contageous spirit that flows over the footlights.

J.I. Greenwood
Show Chairman

Message from the County Commissioner

Scouting continues to thrive as one of the greatest youth movements in the Country. We currently have a national membership of over 600,000 which represents the highest percentage of the available population since Scouting started way back in 1907. Catering for the whole age range from 6 years to 20 years through Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venture Scouts, Scouting provides a unique and enjoyable training opportunity with a tremendous range of indoor and outdoor activities.

Venture Scouts have had both male and female members for many years but the decision has just been taken in principle to allow girls to join the other Sections as well. The details have yet to be finalised, but it seems likely that those Groups that wish to open their doors to girls will be able to doso some time next year. This is just one of the many ways that Scouting is evolving to match the changing needs of our young people today and tomorrow.

Gang Shows too change and develop – not in basic concept, but in the style and content of their presentation. Gang Shows now reflect modern entertainment styles to the extent that tonight you will enjoy a Show of professional standards.

In Cleveland we have launched a fund raising appeal for £75,000 over the next three years to support Scouting through the Nineties and into the 21st Century. Several high profile activities – such as the Clean up Cleveland Day, the Middlesbrough Recruitment Campaign, and the Scouting for Business Exhibition – have taken place to support this campaign, but I doubt if there is a better event than a Gang Show for demonstrating the value of Scouting.

I would like to thank everyone who has helped to stage this Show, from the Sponsors to the Production Team and from the Dressers to the all important and talented Cast. I wish them every success with Gang Show’90.

Neil W. Midgley
County Commissioner.

District Commissioners Report

To paraphrase a familiar song “Once again it’s Gang Show Time”, and it seems no time at all since our last production. In fact during the intervening two years a considerable amount of planning and preparation has taken place for “Gang Show’ 90”.

Since early January this year Cub Scouts, Scouts, Venture Scouts, Leaders and the Scout Fellowship of East and West Middlesbrough Districts, not forgetting the Girl Guides and Rangers, have been working together in order to provide you with your entertainment this evening. All this as well as their usual scouting activities. The Scouts themselves are working to increase the profile of Scouting by being involved in “Scouts go for a Million”, in which patrols have to gain as many points as possible from different activities during 1990. The U.K. patrol with the greatest number of points at the end of the year will win an expenses paid trip to the World Jamboree in Korea during July/August 1991.

We hope you enjoy the show tonight – please feel free to join in – and we thank you for all your continued support.
